It's been a busy couple of weeks since returning from Winter Break. The students have settled back in to the routines and expectations of school life all while wrapping up another unit of study.
UOI: Throughout the unit on Exploration, the students have been practicing gathering information from texts and media and recording that information in simple phrases, words or pictures. They used those skills of researching and note taking to gather information on a place they were interested in exploring. Through questioning and research, the children found the names and discoveries of previous explorers, the tools and transport they used and the results of their exploration. The students then collated this information, chose a format for presentation and shared with the class. The skill of summarizing information gathered from a variety of sources was a truly challenging task, but the children persevered and did their best in the end.
Maths: Time, rounding and number and problem solving have been the focus for the last few weeks. The students have shown immense progress in their basic maths facts, especially with multiplication. Accuracy is improving as we move along and with continued practice, the speed will follow.
The children have continued to use the problem solving questioning to deconstruct story problems:
Games have launched our rounding and time practice. The children have practiced rounding to the 10's and 100's. Time is a big area of study but the aim is for students to be proficient at accurately telling time to the minute. Have a sense of time throughout the day using a timeline and be able to calculate elapsed time.
We will be starting a new Unit of Inquiry next week. Lindy and I will be sending out additional information regarding the unit very soon.

The children have continued to use the problem solving questioning to deconstruct story problems:
- What do I know?
- What am I trying to find out?
- What I did to solve...choose a strategy (draw a diagram, write a number equation, draw a picture, etc.)
