Our current unit of study is an investigation into how the Earth’s natural cycles help to regenerate its resources. A big part of this study is to focus on the local sea community in Busan, so Grade 3 traveled just down the road from school to Cheongsapo Fishing Village. We were fortunate enough to arrive at the right time of day, to see huge crates and sacks full of freshly cut seaweed being unloaded from the boats. All around the port area local people were cleaning, cutting and laying the seaweed out to dry. With the help of Mrs.Jung, we were able to ask many questions regarding the harvesting, drying process and distribution of the seaweed. The students had an opportunity to observe the location of the seaweed farms in the ocean, learn about how crab and lobster traps work, watch a boat get lowered into the water with a giant crane and identify new structures being built in the area due to the damage from Typhoon Chaba.
This local environment was a launching point for students to begin thinking about what the sea community of Busan has to offer us as humans in terms of food and livelihood. They sketched what they saw. Upon arriving back at school, students were given several man-made or natural scenarios that could possibly affect this sea environment and asked to sketch how what they saw in the village would change as a result of these disruptions. This will help lead discussion to one of our final guiding questions in the unit which is, “ What is our responsibility to manage the earth’s resources”?
Please enjoy some of the photos we took during our visit.
