Our Grade 3 assembly and Art Exhibition was a wonderful culmination of our Unit of Inquiry ‘How We Express Ourselves’. Please enjoy the slideshow.
The central idea of ‘different types of at capture our ideas and imaginations’ allowed for a wonderful breadth of learning during the weeks. This unit was a collaboration between homeroom, EAL, Korean, PE, Music and Art teachers. With the central idea and the students underlying opposite emotions weaving the way through each of these subjects.
In homeroom we guided the children through the inquiry focusing on the following questions:
What are different types of art? (form)
What ideas do artists show through their art? (connection)
How can an idea be shown through different types of art? (connection, perspective)
Does a piece of art have the same meaning to everyone? (perspective)
Why is it important for artists to reflect on their art? (reflection)
Over the weeks we focused and reflected on the PYP attitudes of creativity, empathy, confidence and cooperation. The children were also introduced to the IB Design Cycle and encouraged to reflect on their artistic process within the context of this cycle. The children considered the range of ways people express themselves (such as musicians, artists, writers etc) and drew connections to the common process within the design cycle.
After a furiously busy week of finishing art pieces our exhibition was ready for an audience. The students were literally jumping beans - filled with nervousness and excitement.
They shared with confidence and pride to the whole of Elementary School - what an achievement! They all produced such original pieces of artwork, persisted through the design process and then, during the exhibition, used communication and self-management skills beyond their years.
We hope you were as delighted and proud as we were.
